Starter Pack Converter
What it does
Section titled “What it does”The converter takes the people in one or more Starter Packs or lists and turns them into something you own. It can make:
- A new list, either a curation list or a moderation list.
- More members on a list you already own.
- A new Starter Pack, of up to 150 people.
- Follows of everyone you pick.
Add as many packs and lists as you like. The converter combines them into one list of people and removes duplicates, so someone who is in three packs appears once. Each person shows which sources they came from. You choose exactly who goes in, then name the result.
The page has three parts: Sources (what you read from), People (who is in them and who you keep), and Output (what to make).
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- You can preview without signing in. Adding sources, looking through the people, searching, and exporting all work signed out. You sign in only to make something. See Signing In.
- Have the links ready. Copy a Starter Pack or list link from Bluesky: the share link, the
address in your browser, or an
at://address. You can also search for packs on the page. - Your work survives sign-in. The sources, your choices, and the output settings are kept in this tab while you go to your Bluesky server to approve access and come back.
Step by step
Section titled “Step by step”- Open the converter. You can also paste a link on the BskyKit home page and choose See who’s in it; the converter opens with that source added.
- Under Sources, paste one or more Starter Pack or list links, one per line, and choose Add. With the cursor in the box, Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac) adds them too.
- To find packs instead, choose Find packs. Type a topic, or
@and a handle to see that account’s packs. With nothing typed, it shows packs Suggested by Bluesky. Choose Add on any pack; Load more shows further results. - Each source appears with its name, a Pack or List badge, its creator, and how many people it holds. Choose the × beside a source to remove it.
- Under People, look through the combined list. The count at the top reads “N of M selected”, followed by how many are left out and why.
- Untick anyone you do not want. Use the search box and the Select menu to work on many people at once (see Options).
- Under Output, choose what to make in What to make.
- Fill in the details that choice asks for: a list type, a name, a description, an avatar, or the list to add to.
- If you are not signed in, the Output panel shows Sign in to continue. Sign in and come back to the same work.
- Choose the button at the bottom of the Output panel, such as Create list with 48 people. The run starts at once; there is no separate confirmation step. If another run is already writing, the new one waits in the queue and starts after it.
- Watch the progress in the Output panel: written, skipped, and still to go. When it finishes, choose Open on Bluesky to see the new list or pack.
Once a run starts, the converter clears its sources so the next conversion starts fresh. The run keeps everything it needs.
Options
Section titled “Options”Sources
Section titled “Sources”These links work:
- Starter Pack links:
bsky.app/starter-pack/...,bsky.app/starter-pack-short/..., andgo.bsky.app/...short links. - List links:
bsky.app/profile/.../lists/.... at://addresses of a Starter Pack or list.
You can paste several at once. Adding a source that is already there has no effect.
Search and the Select menu
Section titled “Search and the Select menu”- Search by name or handle narrows the list to people whose name or handle contains your text. An exact DID also matches.
- Select holds the bulk choices. Without a search they act on everyone; with a search they act
on everyone shown:
- Tick everyone (or Tick everyone shown).
- Untick everyone (or Untick everyone shown).
- Invert: ticks the unticked and unticks the ticked.
- Only from a source: keeps only the people from that pack or list. This appears when you have more than one source.
Everyone starts ticked, apart from people the Leave out filters remove.
Leave out
Section titled “Leave out”The Leave out chips drop whole groups at once. Each chip shows how many people it matches. People a chip leaves out show a badge with the reason, and you cannot tick them until you turn the chip off.
| Chip | Leaves out | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Already on the list | People already on the list you are adding to. Shown only for Add to my list. | On |
| Following | Accounts you already follow. Always on for Follow all. | Off |
| Blocked | Accounts you block or that block you. | On |
| Labeled | Accounts with a moderation label, such as spam or impersonation, or an adult-content label they set themselves. | Off |
| Invalid handle | Accounts whose handle no longer verifies. They show by name or DID with an Invalid handle badge. | On |
Invalid handle works signed out. The others need you to sign in; signed out, the page says “Sign in to leave out people you already follow or block.” After you sign in, Following and Blocked wait while BskyKit is Checking follows and blocks.
What to make
Section titled “What to make”- New list: create a list. Choose a List type:
- Curation list: browse their posts as a feed.
- Moderation list: a list that can be used to mute or block everyone on it.
- Add to my list: add people to a list you own. Pick it under Your list; each choice shows its type and how many people it holds.
- New Starter Pack: up to 150 people.
- Follow all: follow everyone selected. People you already follow are skipped, and your own account is never included.
The default is New list, as a Curation list.
Name, description, and avatar
Section titled “Name, description, and avatar”- Name is required for a new list or Starter Pack. It suggests itself from the sources, such as the first source’s name followed by “+ 2 more”; type over it to choose your own.
- Description is optional.
- Avatar is optional and only for a new list: a PNG or JPEG image of up to 1 MB.
Export
Section titled “Export”Export downloads the ticked people as CSV (people.csv) or JSON (people.json). Each
row holds the DID, the handle, the display name, and the sources the person came from. Export is
unavailable until a source is added and at least one person is ticked; the info tip beside it says
why. Export is a download only and changes nothing on Bluesky.
What gets changed
Section titled “What gets changed”Adding sources, filtering, and exporting change nothing. The run writes to your account on your own Bluesky server, depending on what you chose:
- New list: one new list record, with its name, description, and avatar, plus one list entry for each person.
- Add to my list: one list entry on your chosen list for each person. The list’s name, description, and avatar stay as they are.
- New Starter Pack: a list that holds the pack’s members, one list entry for each person, and the Starter Pack itself.
- Follow all: one follow for each person.
Where the data comes from:
- Packs, lists, their members, your own lists, and pack search results are read from Bluesky’s public API.
- Whether you follow or block each person is read through your own Bluesky server.
- Writes go to your own Bluesky server, up to 200 records at a time.
What stays on this device: the work in progress for this tab, and a record of each run in History. See Data on Your Device.
A moderation list does not mute or block anyone by itself. Subscribe to it on Bluesky to mute or block the people on it.
Every converter run can be undone, either with Undo on the finished run in the Output panel or later from History.
- Undoing a new list or Starter Pack deletes the list or pack the run created, with its entries.
- Undoing Add to my list removes only the entries the run added. Members who were already there stay.
- Undoing Follow all deletes the follows the run created.
See History & Undo for how resuming and undoing work.
Limits
Section titled “Limits”- Starter Packs hold at most 150 people. With more ticked, the button is unavailable and the page says how many to untick.
- Names can be up to 64 characters for a list and 50 for a Starter Pack.
- Descriptions can be up to 300 characters.
- Avatars must be PNG or JPEG, up to 1 MB.
- Write pace: each list entry or follow costs three of your server’s write points, and your server allows about 5,000 an hour. A run of more than about 1,666 people therefore takes more than an hour. When that applies, the page says how many hours the run takes before you start. The run pauses at the limit and continues by itself while the tab is open; if you close the tab, resume it from History.
- Follow all counts toward the 1,000 follows, unfollows, blocks, and mutes a day that BskyKit suggests.
See Limits & Pacing for the full numbers.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”“Not a Starter Pack or list link.”
Section titled ““Not a Starter Pack or list link.””The text you pasted is not one of the link types the converter reads. Copy the link again from Bluesky, and make sure each link is on its own line. Profile links and post links do not work here; to follow a set of accounts by handle, use Bulk Follow.
“Short link … does not exist”
Section titled ““Short link … does not exist””The go.bsky.app link is mistyped or no longer points anywhere. Open the pack on Bluesky and copy
its full address instead.
The Following and Blocked chips are greyed out
Section titled “The Following and Blocked chips are greyed out”These chips need to know whom you follow and block, so they wait until you sign in. After signing in, they stay unavailable while the page is Checking follows and blocks. If the page shows “Could not check follows and blocks”, reload the page to try again.
The button stays unavailable
Section titled “The button stays unavailable”The line under the button says why, for example:
- “Select at least one person.”
- “Give it a name.”
- “Choose one of your lists.”
- “Starter Packs hold at most 150 people. Untick 12.”
- “Avatars must be PNG or JPEG.” or “Avatars must be 1 MB or smaller.”
“You do not have any lists yet.”
Section titled ““You do not have any lists yet.””Add to my list needs a list you own. Choose New list instead, or create a list first.
Some people were skipped
Section titled “Some people were skipped”When Bluesky refuses a record, the run skips that person and carries on with the rest. Open Why were some skipped? under the run to see each account and the reason.
