Following Review
What it does
Section titled “What it does”Following Review loads every account you follow and marks each one with the reasons you might want to unfollow it: it does not follow you back, it is gone, it never posted, it has gone quiet, it is labeled, one of you blocks the other, its handle no longer works, or you follow it twice. You filter by those reasons, pick the accounts, and unfollow them in one run that you can undo.
It reads your follow records straight from your own Bluesky server, so follows of deleted accounts are included. The Bluesky app hides those, but they still count toward your following total.
Following Review is the first tab of Follow Tools, next to Follow Back, Bulk Follow, and Follower Changes.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Sign in. Your follows are read from your own Bluesky server, so the page needs your account. See Signing In.
- Allow time on a large account. Follows arrive 100 at a time. A list of tens of thousands takes a few minutes, and the list is usable while it loads.
- Keep the tab open for long work. Loads, the activity check, and runs only progress while a BskyKit tab is open. They keep going when you move to another BskyKit page in the same tab.
Step by step
Section titled “Step by step”- Open Following Review and sign in if asked. The first visit loads your follows on its own. Later visits show the list kept in this browser at once, with “Loaded N min ago”.
- Under Show, choose one or more reasons, such as Not following back or Gone. Each chip shows how many follows it matches. With no chip chosen, every follow is shown.
- To find quiet accounts, choose Inactive, pick a cutoff under Inactive after, and choose Check activity in the Activity panel that appears. See Activity check.
- Look through the rows. Each shows the account, its reason badges, and a line such as “followed 12 Mar 2024 · last active 3 Jan 2025”. Choose a row’s name to open the profile on Bluesky.
- Tick the accounts to unfollow, or use Select → Select all shown.
- Choose Unfollow selected in the side panel. The panel shows how many follows, blocks, and mutes you made in the last 24 hours, and how many this run adds.
- Confirm in the dialog, which reads “Unfollow N accounts?”. A large run first offers a choice; see Limits.
- The run writes in the side panel, with written, skipped, and to go. Unfollowed accounts drop out of the list. When it finishes, choose Undo if you change your mind, or Dismiss.
Options
Section titled “Options”Each follow can carry several reasons. The Show chips narrow the list to follows with any of the reasons you choose. None are chosen by default, which shows every follow.
- Not following back: the account does not follow you. Accounts you followed in the last 14 days are left out unless you turn on Count recent follows as not following back.
- Gone: Bluesky returns no profile for the account. It was deleted, deactivated, or taken down. The row says “Deleted, deactivated, or taken down”.
- Never posted: the account has no posts.
- Inactive: the account’s newest post or repost is older than the Inactive after cutoff. This reason only appears for accounts the activity check has looked at.
- Labeled: the account has a moderation label.
- Blocked: you block the account, or it blocks you.
- Invalid handle: the account’s handle no longer verifies, because its DNS or HTTPS record is gone or points to another account. These rows show the name or DID instead.
- Duplicate: you have more than one follow record for the same account. The oldest record is the real follow; every later record is marked Duplicate. Unfollow a duplicate row to delete just that extra record and keep following the account.
Count recent follows as not following back
Section titled “Count recent follows as not following back”Off by default. Someone you followed in the last 14 days may not have noticed yet, so those accounts are left out of Not following back. Turn this on to include them.
Inactive after
Section titled “Inactive after”30 days, 90 days (the default), 180 days, or 365 days. It sets how old an account’s newest post or repost must be to count as Inactive.
Activity check
Section titled “Activity check”Choosing Inactive opens the Activity panel. Bluesky’s profiles do not say when an account last posted, so BskyKit asks for each account’s newest post or repost: one request per account, oldest follow first. Accounts that are gone or have never posted are skipped.
- Check activity starts the check. Pause holds it; Resume or Check the rest carries on.
- The panel shows checked, remaining, and time left. If some accounts could not be checked, it says how many and offers Try again.
- Results stay in this browser for 24 hours, so a paused check resumes where it stopped and a reload does not start over.
Select and Export
Section titled “Select and Export”- Select → Select all shown, Select none, or Invert shown. Selections outside the current filters are kept and counted as “selected outside this view”.
- Export downloads the selected accounts as CSV (
follows.csv) or JSON (follows.json), with the DID, handle, display name, and reasons. It is unavailable until you select an account.
Refresh and Clear
Section titled “Refresh and Clear”- Refresh loads your follows again. The current list stays on screen until the new one is complete.
- Clear drops the loaded list and its activity results for the tab, resets the filters, the cutoff, and the recent-follows switch to their defaults, and clears the selection. The page then shows Load your follows and waits until you choose it. Clear never cancels a queued or running run.
What gets changed
Section titled “What gets changed”An unfollow run deletes the follow records you selected from your account, on your own Bluesky server. Nothing else changes: your lists, blocks, and mutes stay as they are.
Where the data comes from:
- Your follow records are read from your own Bluesky server.
- Profiles, follow-back state, labels, and blocks are read through your own Bluesky server.
- The activity check reads each account’s newest post from Bluesky’s public API.
What stays on this device: the loaded list, until you clear it, refresh it, or sign out; the activity results, for 24 hours; and a record of each run in History. See Data on Your Device.
Undo an unfollow run with Undo on the finished run in the side panel, or later from History. Undo follows the same accounts again. The restored follows carry the date of the undo, not the original date. See History & Undo.
Limits
Section titled “Limits”- Unfollow pace: your server allows up to about 5,000 unfollows an hour and 35,000 a day.
- Daily suggestion: BskyKit suggests at most 1,000 follows, unfollows, blocks, and mutes a day, counted over the last 24 hours. The Last 24 hours meter in the side panel shows where you stand.
- Large runs: a run that crosses the suggestion, or takes more than a day, opens a choice titled
“Unfollowing N accounts takes at least D days”. You can:
- Unfollow the first … now: unfollows the oldest follows in your selection, as many as today’s suggestion leaves room for, and keeps the rest selected for another day. If you already reached 1,000 in the last 24 hours, this choice is unavailable.
- Start the whole run: it pauses at Bluesky’s limits and continues while the tab is open, or when you come back.
- Loading: a test with 50,000 follows loaded in about 2 minutes. Real accounts may load more slowly.
- Activity check: one request per account, four at a time. On a large account it takes a while; the panel shows the time left.
See Limits & Pacing.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”“Could not load your follows”
Section titled ““Could not load your follows””The load stopped on an error. If some follows had loaded, the notice says how many are kept and offers Try again from there; otherwise choose Try again.
“Bluesky asked us to slow down.”
Section titled ““Bluesky asked us to slow down.””Your Bluesky server limits how fast one connection can read. The load waits and carries on by itself; the line counts down the seconds. During the activity check the message reads “Bluesky asked for a pause.”
Inactive shows 0
Section titled “Inactive shows 0”Inactive only counts accounts the activity check has looked at. Choose Inactive, then Check activity, and let it run.
Someone who follows you shows as Not following back
Section titled “Someone who follows you shows as Not following back”Bluesky can take a moment to reflect a new follow. Choose Refresh to load your follows again.
Gone accounts still count in your following total
Section titled “Gone accounts still count in your following total”Their follow records are still in your account. Choose Gone, select them, and unfollow them like any other account.
“BskyKit is open in another tab”
Section titled ““BskyKit is open in another tab””Run history and the activity cache live in one database in this browser, and another BskyKit tab is holding an older version of it open. Close the other tab and reload.
