Reply Settings
What it does
Section titled “What it does”Bluesky lets you choose, post by post, who can reply to a post and whether it can be quoted. Reply Settings makes that choice for many of your posts at once:
- Who can reply: anyone, nobody, or only some people: people you mention, people you follow, your followers, and members of your own lists.
- Quotes: allowed or off.
It lists your own posts that start a thread, each with its setting now, such as Anyone can reply, Followers and mentioned, or No replies, plus No quotes when quotes are off. Replies are not listed: Bluesky applies reply settings to the first post of a thread.
Changes run as a run in History, and you can undo them.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”- Sign in. See Signing In.
- It uses the shared read of your posts, reposts, and likes, the same one as Bulk Delete and Content Search. If you already read your account in one of those tools, your posts show at once. See the shared read.
- It also reads your current settings from your own server. This starts by itself when you open the page.
- To let members of a list reply, the list must be one of your own lists of people, not a moderation list. Each such list shows in the panel as Members of its name. See your lists in My Lists.
Step by step
Section titled “Step by step”- Open Reply Settings and sign in.
- Choose Read my posts, reposts, and likes, unless the read is already there. Your current settings are read alongside: Reading who can reply, then Reading who can quote. Once read, the line above the list says Reply settings loaded just now.
- Narrow the list with Replies, Quotes, Date, and Search.
- Select posts: tick rows one by one, or use the Select menu: Select all shown, Select none, or Invert shown.
- In the panel beside the list, choose Who can reply: Anyone, Nobody, or Only some people. With Only some people, tick who: People you mention, People you follow, Your followers, or Members of one of your lists.
- Choose Quotes: Allowed or Off.
- Check the line under Change selected, such as 120 posts to change. 8 posts already have it. Posts that already have the setting are skipped.
- Choose Change selected. The confirmation names the setting, such as Change 120 posts? and Replies: People you follow. Quotes: Off.
- Choose Change 120 posts. The run shows in the panel and in History. When it ends, BskyKit reads your settings again, so the rows show the new setting.
Options
Section titled “Options”Filters
Section titled “Filters”| Filter | Choices | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replies | All, Anyone, Limited, No replies | All | Posts by who can reply now. Limited is any post where only some people can reply. |
| Quotes | All, Allowed, Off | All | Posts by whether they can be quoted now. |

| Search | Any text | Empty | Posts whose text or address (at://…) holds it, in any case. |
The list is newest first. Your filters, selection, and choice are kept while you move around BskyKit in this tab, and reset when you sign out or switch accounts.
The setting
Section titled “The setting”| Choice | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Anyone | Removes the reply limit. | Chosen |
| Nobody | No one can reply. | |
| Only some people | Only the people you tick can reply. Tick up to five in all; the rest are disabled once five are ticked. | |
| Allowed (Quotes) | The post can be quoted. | Chosen |
| Off (Quotes) | No one can quote the post. |
Some parts of a post’s settings are kept as they are:
- Replies you hid on a post in Bluesky stay hidden, even with Anyone.
- Quotes you detached from a post in Bluesky stay detached.
What gets changed
Section titled “What gets changed”For each selected post that does not already have the setting, BskyKit writes two of your own records on your own Bluesky server:
- Who can reply is the post’s reply setting record (a threadgate). Anyone removes it, or keeps it without the limit when it also holds hidden replies. Nobody and Only some people create or update it.
- Quotes is the post’s quote setting record (a postgate). Off creates or updates it. Allowed takes the rule out, and removes the record when nothing else is left in it.
The posts themselves are not changed. Your posts come from the shared read; your current settings are read from your own server and kept while the tab is open. History on this device keeps each changed post’s previous settings and the first 100 characters of its text, for undo. See Data on Your Device.
Open the run in History and choose Undo. The confirmation reads “Puts back the previous settings on 120 posts.” Each post gets back exactly the settings it had before the run: a record the run created is removed, one it changed is put back, and one it removed is made again. See History & Undo.
Limits
Section titled “Limits”- Who can reply: at most five choices of people, Bluesky’s limit.
- Write points: each post takes one or two writes. Creating a record costs 3 points, changing one 2, and removing one 1. Your server allows about 5,000 points an hour and 35,000 a day. When a run takes longer than an hour at those limits, the confirmation says how long; the run pauses and continues by itself while a BskyKit tab is open.
- Batches: up to 100 posts, at most 200 writes, per request.
- Reply Settings runs have no daily suggestion. See Limits & Pacing.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”Change selected stays greyed out
Section titled “Change selected stays greyed out”The line under it says why:
- Select posts to change. Select at least one post.
- Reading your reply settings. Wait for the current settings to finish reading.
- Choose who can reply. With Only some people, tick at least one.
- They already have this setting. Every selected post already has it.
“Choose your lists again.”
Section titled ““Choose your lists again.””A list you ticked is no longer one of your lists. Untick it and choose again.
“Could not read your reply settings”
Section titled ““Could not read your reply settings””Your current settings could not be read from your server. Choose Try again. Until they are read, Change selected stays off, because BskyKit needs each post’s settings to undo the run.
A reply of yours is not in the list
Section titled “A reply of yours is not in the list”Only posts that start a thread are listed. A reply follows the settings of the first post in its thread.
A row cannot be selected
Section titled “A row cannot be selected”It shows In a Reply Settings run: it is already in a run that has not finished. Follow it in the panel or in History.
