Block & Mute Lists

Open Block & Mute Lists →

On Bluesky you can subscribe to a moderation list in one of two ways:

  • As a block list: you block everyone on the list, including people added later.
  • As a mute list: you mute everyone on the list, including people added later.

Block & Mute Lists shows every moderation list you subscribe to, either way, with its name, creator, and size. You can unsubscribe from the ones you choose in one run, and subscribe to a new list by pasting its link. Both can be undone from History.

The page is the Lists tab of the Moderation tools.

  • Sign in with your Bluesky account. See Signing In.
  • To subscribe, have the list’s bsky.app link ready, such as https://bsky.app/profile/alice.bsky.social/lists/3k…, or its at:// address. Only moderation lists can be subscribed to; curation lists cannot.
  • To build your own moderation list from an account’s followers, see Block Followers.
  1. Open Block & Mute Lists and sign in if asked.
  2. Your subscriptions load by themselves, with a progress bar. Choose Stop to end the read early.
  3. Under Subscribed as, choose Blocking or Muting. Each shows its count, such as Blocking (3).
  4. Tick the lists to leave, or use Select and then Select all shown. Choose a list’s name to open it on Bluesky.
  5. Choose Unsubscribe selected in the side column.
  6. In the confirmation, Unsubscribe from 2 lists?, with The lists themselves don’t change., choose Unsubscribe from 2 lists (the number matches your selection).
  7. The run starts, or waits behind runs already in the queue. When it ends, your subscriptions load again.
  1. In the side column, paste the list’s link into Subscribe to a moderation list.
  2. Under Subscribe as, choose Block list or Mute list.
  3. Choose Subscribe. BskyKit checks the link and starts the run straight away, without a separate confirmation. The box empties when the run is queued.
Choice Shows
Blocking (default) Lists you subscribe to as block lists.
Muting Lists you subscribe to as mute lists.

Each row shows the list’s avatar, its name, by @creator, and its member count, and links to the list on Bluesky. A block list subscription whose list Bluesky no longer shows stays in the list as List not available, with Deleted, or not shown by Bluesky, so you can still unsubscribe from it.

Choice What it does
Select all shown Selects every list in the view shown.
Select none Clears the whole selection.
Invert shown Flips the selection of the lists shown.

There is no export on this page.

  • Refresh reads your subscriptions again. What is shown stays until the new read is in.
  • Stop ends a read under way; what was shown before stays.

Block list (default) or Mute list, for the link in Subscribe to a moderation list.

  • Subscribing as a block list creates one list block record (app.bsky.graph.listblock) on your own Bluesky server. Unsubscribing deletes it. Like blocks, these records are public.
  • Subscribing as a mute list asks your server to mute the list, and unsubscribing asks it to unmute the list. Like mutes, this is private and writes no record.
  • Neither changes the list itself or its members.
  • Your block list records are read from your own server; the lists’ names, creators, and sizes, and your mute lists, through it. A pasted link is looked up in Bluesky’s public API (AppView).
  • The subscriptions stay only in the open tab. Signing out or switching account clears them. See Data on Your Device.

Undo either run from History:

  • Undoing an unsubscribe subscribes you again to the same lists, in the same way.
  • Undoing a subscribe removes that subscription: it deletes the list block record, or unmutes the list. Nothing else on your account is touched.

See History & Undo.

  • Subscribing and unsubscribing count toward the 1,000 a day BskyKit suggests, together with follows, unfollows, blocks, unblocks, and mutes. The meter under the button shows Follows, blocks, and mutes in the last 24 hours.
  • A block list subscription costs three write points, and an unsubscribe one. Mute list changes use no write points; BskyKit sends them about four a second.
  • You subscribe to one list at a time by link.

See Limits & Pacing.

The text is not a list link. Copy the address from the list’s page on bsky.app. Starter Pack links, short links, and profile links do not work here.

The list was deleted, or the link has a typo. Open the link on bsky.app to check.

“This is a curation list. Only moderation lists can be subscribed to.”

Section titled ““This is a curation list. Only moderation lists can be subscribed to.””

Bluesky only lets you block or mute moderation lists. To turn a curation list of your own into a moderation list, use Make a moderation list in My Lists.

“You already subscribe to “…” as a block list.”

Section titled ““You already subscribe to “…” as a block list.””

You are already subscribed to that list in that way (the message says “mute list” for mute lists). Nothing needs doing.

Your server did not answer, or the connection dropped. Choose Try again.

The list was deleted, or Bluesky no longer shows it, but your subscription record is still there. Select it and choose Unsubscribe selected to remove it.
